NLP Coaching – Understanding patterns, expanding choice

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a coaching method that explores how people structure their inner experience – how thinking, language, emotions and behaviour interact. NLP was developed in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder, who analysed communication patterns of particularly effective therapists and change facilitators.

Their core insight was simple but powerful

People follow internal patterns — and when these patterns become visible, they can be changed.

NLP Coaching Wien – Tobias Judmaier

In NLP coaching, we examine how you perceive situations, how you interpret events, and how these interpretations influence your actions and decisions. Many challenges persist not because of external circumstances, but because certain inner strategies have become automatic.

Research & practical relevance

NLP has been used for decades in coaching, leadership development and training in communication and personal development. It is not a scientifically standardised therapeutic method, but a practice-oriented approach for observing and influencing patterns of perception, thinking and behaviour.

Many NLP concepts reflect observations that are also relevant in psychology, learning theory and communication theory – such as the influence of attention, language, internal imagery and experience on behaviour and decision-making.

NLP understands itself less as a closed theoretical system and more as a model for structured self-observation and conscious change.

In my work, I apply NLP in a pragmatic, reflective and responsible way:
not as a collection of techniques or “tricks”, but as a tool to expand awareness, make internal patterns visible and develop new choices.

“Once you know what you are doing, you can do something else.” — Richard Bandler

NLP coaching is always solution-oriented and future-focused. We work with what is present — and with what is possible.

FAQ – NLP Coaching

What is NLP coaching?

NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) coaching focuses on understanding how thinking, language, emotions, and behavior interact. It helps identify patterns that influence decisions and reactions, and supports developing new, more constructive ways of responding to situations.

Is NLP therapy?

No. NLP coaching is not psychotherapy. It is a goal-oriented coaching approach that works with present challenges and future goals. It does not diagnose or treat mental illness and does not replace therapy or medical care.

Is NLP scientifically proven?

NLP is not a single standardized scientific model. However, many NLP concepts align with established findings from cognitive psychology, learning theory, and systems theory, particularly regarding perception, attention, language, and behavioral flexibility. In coaching, NLP is widely used as a practical, experience-based method.

Will NLP coaching manipulate my thinking?

No. In my work, NLP is used transparently and responsibly. The goal is not manipulation, but awareness and choice. You remain fully autonomous at all times, and every step is discussed and agreed upon together.

How does NLP coaching differ from talking about problems?

NLP coaching focuses less on analyzing problems in detail and more on understanding how you experience situations internally — and how you can change that experience in a constructive way. The emphasis is on solutions, resources, and practical change.
